claus westermann's birthday

October 7th is claus westermann's birthday. he was born in the year 1909

he was truly a great form critic, judging from the commentaries he wrote using form criticism e.g. genesis, isaiah 40-66 etc. his books 'basic forms of prophetic speech' and 'prophetic oracles of salvation in the OT' are still used when teaching students about form criticism in the prophetic books. his books on wisdom literature are still read and studied. there are still a lot of his books and articles written in german yet to be translated into english for a wider audience.

happy westermann birthday!

Just came across this blog while searching for Claus Westermann. I just began reading his commentary on Genesis. What a great work!

Do you know where I can find a list of scholarly commentaries on the individual books of the old testament? I would also like to find a review of modern methods of Biblical interpretation.

Thanks so much

the above is a link where new commentaries to be published are listed. great help to know what is coming out.

as for existing OT commentaries, tremper longman has done a little book called 'old testament commentary survey' 4th ed. by baker. he gives a short summary of the strengths of each commentaries. we recommend our students to read it first before embarking on purchasing any OT commentary. (The NT equivalent is by d.a. carson)

a new one in the market this year is 'Commentary and Reference Survey: A Comprehensive Guide to Biblical and Theological Resources' by John Glynn. publisher is kregel.

on a review of methods of biblical interpretation, there are a few good books that i recommend to my students in exegesis class:

1] john barton, reading the old testament: method in biblical study (London: DLT, 1996).
2] stephen haynes and steven mckenzie, to each its own (westminster john knox, 1993).
in the earlier post, when i said john glyn's new publication, i meant 'new' as of this year. it is now in its 10th edition. highly recommended by a good friend, david instone-brewer of tyndale house.

ralph klien's website also has a section on his recommendations on OT commentaries. click the box on OT on the left to pull down a window and click on commentaries recommendations. his list of OT commentaries also sometimes contain links of reviews by other scholars.
one more area where you can read good reviews of OT commentaries is the sbl website on 'review of biblical literature'. with the search facility, you can search for peer reviews of new and old OT commentaries. just click the 'search reviews' button on the left.
