still got time to play musical chairs

from malaysia today

In a minor Cabinet reshuffle today, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi named his deputy Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak as finance minister.

Abdullah, who was the finance minister, will take over Najib's defence ministry portfolio. He said he may step down sooner than 2010.

The swap was announced after today's Cabinet meeting.

Najib has also been made deputy chairman of Khazanah Nasional.

Today's announcement comes amid widespread speculation over a transition plan hammered out between the country's top two leaders for Najib to take over power in 2010.

Said Abdullah today:' "The transition is flexible. It is up to me. It will be no later than 2010 but it may be sooner."

Abdullah added that he would also offer himself as a candidate to be Umno president while Najib would stand as deputy president at this year's Umno elections.

Najib, who was also at the press conference, said: "I would like to thank the prime minister for his confidence.

"Giving me this post shows he is magnanimous, it shows his sincerity in picking me as his successor."

Sources said Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz is also expected to be named de facto law minister to replace Datuk Zaid Ibrahim, who quit this week over the Internal Security Act (ISA) arrests of DAP leader Teresa Kok and two others.

the reb's comments: if all the talk about the submarine deal and najib is true, this means more opportunities for you know what. and the wife will be also very happy -  more shopping in store? and we all know what will happen - the rakyat's money will disappear fast. and badawi as defence minister? is he going to call up the army to ensure he stays on?

Have you read NECF's response to the ISA detentions? Pathetic. You can read more in my blog. I wasn't very kind to them. The fruit of the Spirit is evidently lacking in me these days.
sp, i fully agree with you. in fact, i no longer read berita necf. i no longer read what kim kong writes.

dr lim kar yong has also highlighted some of the rather pathetic statements issued in the recent past from kim kong and necf (e.g. the malaysian church must be apolitical).

whither the OT prophets? very fewlah. the reb also dying breed.

when one has to call a spade a spade, then do it. it can still be done with love. but not to call a spade a spade is a different thing altogether.

Since I'm still an associate member (but not for long) I still received Berita NECF and read them.

I was much encouraged by the Chairman's message in the latest issue of Berita (July - August 2008)with the title 'Black is Black, White is White'and even quoting Isa 5:20.

It ended with the conclusion 'The Church, filled with good men, can be 'good for nothing' .. unless we speak up! Yes, it's time we speak.'

So you can imagine my disappointment with its press statement. Yes, NECF has spoken up. But it whimpered like a wounded dog instead of roaring like a lion (to use the imagery from Amos)
they were probably trying to be cautious and didn't want themselves ending up like the catholic herald. but that is where the price is - keep quiet and get the datukships or be vocal and run the risk of being closed down.
