congrats to myhomilia

my NT colleague, myhomilia, proudly announces to the world the publication of his PhD thesis (of which the whole of STM is proud oh his achievement). his alma mater also has highlighted this twice. see links below:

Why is it that Westerners find it so difficult to get our names right i.e. which is our surname and which is our given name(s)? I'm not sure if anyone here call Kar Yong 'Kar'.

It irked me whenever I received mail overseas that addresses me as Mr. Pheng

they are unable to know what part of our name is our surname e.g. Lim Kar Yong. so, following western convention, we change the order of our name to Kar Yong Lim.

but if they did not know that we have change the order, then they think 'Kar' is our surname!

so, the reb's advice, leave our names as it is.

better still, use a hyphen so that it becomes Lim Kar-Yong or Kar-Yong Lim. then it will be more obvious. but still, they may then quote us a Kar-Yong!

So am I right if it's a footnote it should be cited as Kar Yong Lim and if it's in the Bibliography then it should be Lim, Kar Yong?

Things will get more confusing with Au Yong Kok Wai or Sze To Meng where Au Yong and Sze To are actually the surnames. And what if you add a 'Christian' name in front of those names.

Though I don't blame them if they get it wrong but the least they can do is to ask instead making assumptions.

strangely, if footnote, leave the name unchanged - Lim Kar Yong. for bibliography, use as you suggested - Lim, Kar Yong.

the fun begins with double surnames Sze To (if Szeto then still ok)!

you're right. they could have asked but being Westerners....

to add: when the layout of the book cover arrived, my surname becomes "Yong Kar"!!

If I were to use my name as Lim Kar Yong, then most library would catalogue my book under the surname "Yong" - and many would not be able to search for it.

Confusion....

Anyway, thanks for the post, Reb. Since I came back from Rome, I was really tenggelam with all the 5 theses. Now only catching up with my blogroll...
