students occasionally asks me what commentaries should they buy with their limited budget. in the old days, we referred to j. goldingay's and d.a.carson's ot and nt commentary surveys.
nowadays, there are a slew of website sites that can help a bible student make an educated choice before buying a commentary.
tyler f williams site on ot commentary survey - http://www.biblical-studies.ca/ot-commentaries.html
ot gateway site - www.otgateway.com/commentaries.htm
covenant seminary site - www.covenantseminary.edu/upload/48d186017e0a2.pdf
bill muehlenberg site - www.billmuehlenberg.com/2010/07/14/recommended-old-testament-commentaries/
and a very useful site by john dyer - www.bestcommentaries.com
the last one is extremely useful as it has both ot and nt commentaries. it has also forthcoming commentaries (which gives you an idea of who is writing what commentary and in which series).
