hebrew bible in mp3

for my STM students and especially those in Hebrew class, in case you haven't check out some of the OT links i posted on STM website, here is one good link:

http://www.mechon-mamre.org/p/pt/pt00.htm#mp3

you can download the hebrew bible book by book in the form of mp3 files. also book by book of the hebrew text . the reader is a arabic catholic monk (who has since died) but one can hear his pronunciation of the different vowels in his reading of the hebrew text. really good to hear the hebrew text read. useful if you have a mp3 player to listen while travelling. you may not understand everything said but this is to catch how hebrew sounds like and ought to sound like. extremely useful for the Hebrew class students. remember: reading is one of the keys to understanding hebrew.

or the other link above is individual chapters of each book in mp3 format.

israel's 60th anniversary (May 14th 2008) / 5th Iyar (May 8th 2008)

(first pic on left - scroll of proclamation of independence; pic on right- list of signatories)

(pic in middle - original invitation to independence day)

(pic below - crowd at the museum at Tel Aviv where independence was first proclaimed)

may 14th 2008 will be the modern state of Israel's 60th anniversary (although Israel celebrated Independence Day on May 8th this year. This is because the Israelis used the Hebrew lunar calendar. Independence was proclaimed on 5th Iyar (corresponding day in the Gregorian calendar was May 14th 1948). you can read about it in the news through yahoo news. no matter which day we observe (may 8th or may 14th), it will be a moment of significance to look back at 60 years of independence.

stm will be having a one hour presentation by yours truly on wednesday may 14th from 5.00-6.00pm in the conference room. i will share about briefly about what happened to israel after AD70, the history of zionism, the aliyah (return) to the land of Israel, independence day may 14th 1948 and the events after this.

if you are interested and free on that afternoon, pop down to seremban for the ppt presentation.

a torah as strong as its spirit

john hobbins has a link to an intersting story to warm the hearts. during ww2, adolf hitler tried to exterminate the jews. he did try, killing 6 million in the holocaust but the jews are a resilient people, no thanks to their undying belief in the Torah. hitler may have killed the body but one cannot kill the Torah.

From Auschwitz, a Torah as Strong as Its Spirit

The back story of how a Torah got from the fetid barracks of Auschwitz to the ark of the Central Synagogue at Lexington Avenue and 55th Street is one the pastor of the Lutheran church down the street sums up as simply “miraculous.”

It is the story of a sexton in the synagogue in the Polish city of Oswiecim who buried most of the sacred scroll before the Germans stormed in and later renamed the city Auschwitz. It is the story of Jewish prisoners who sneaked the rest of it — four carefully chosen panels — into the concentration camp.

It is the story of a Polish Catholic priest to whom they entrusted the four panels before their deaths. It is the story of a Maryland rabbi who went looking for it with a metal detector. And it is the story of how a hunch by the rabbi’s 13-year-old son helped lead him to it.

This Torah, more than most, “is such an extraordinary symbol of rebirth,” said Peter J. Rubinstein, the rabbi of Central Synagogue. “As one who has gone to the camps and assimilates into my being the horror of the Holocaust, this gives meaning to Jewish survival.”

no more ideas?

from http://michaelpahl.blogspot.com/2008/04/meaning-of-phd.html
---------------------------------
The meaning of a phd

According to Canadian icon and humorist Stephen Leacock in the preface to his 1912 classic, Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town:

'The meaning of this degree is that the recipient of instruction is examined for the last time in his life, and is pronounced completely full. After this, no new ideas can be imparted to him'.

-----------------------------

and here i am trying to complete my phd! no more new ideas can be imparted to me after i finish my phd?

sounds like a story i read recently in the Sandman series entitled 'calliope' where a writer has mental block, cannot write any more stories, managed to get a muse, becomes successful with novels after novels, but one day she appeals to morpheus the dream king who pleas with the writer to free the muse but he refused because he wants ideas for his novels. so the sandman proceed to fill the writer with tons of ideas and to cut the story short, in the end the story finishes with the muse set free, she forgave the writer, the dream king stops the ideas from coming to the writer's head and voila! he is back to square one but with no more further ideas in his head and no more novels!

sounds scary for people like us. no more ideas? no more insights? no more gems? btw, go and read the series. can be found in mph, borders etc. the box edition is a whoping rm 325.oo per box! there are 11 volumes in the sandman series.
